Newark and Sherwood has new Chairman

The newly elected chairman of Newark and Sherwood District Council is Councillor Keith Walker.

Councillor Walker received the chains of office as the ceremonial head of the authority at the district council’s annual meeting on Tuesday, May 15. He succeeds Councillor Linda Tift who has completed her year-long service.

He first served as district councillor for Farndon from May 1981 until 1991 and again from 1999 until 2011. In 2015 he was elected to serve Farndon and Fernwood. He is also the Nottinghamshire County Council representative for Balderton having first being elected in October 1987 and was county council chairman in 2011-12. He also served on Farndon Parish Council for 40 years and has been a parish councillor for Balderton Parish Council for 10 years where he has also been chairman for the past six years.

Elston-born, Councillor Walker has lived and worked in the district all his life. He serves on the district council’s licensing, general purposes and leisure and environment committees.

He said: “It is a great honour to be serving as chairman for the forthcoming year and I look forward to meeting and supporting people throughout the district.”

For his year as chairman, Cllr Walker has chosen Newark Home Start as his nominated charity which provides support for families throughout the district.

His partner is former Mayor of Newark, Joan Whicher, who will serve as his escort for the year. He is also the elder twin brother of Councillor Ivor Walker, district councillor for Farndon and Fernwood, by two hours.

Councillor Walker, who lives in Collingham, went to the former Robert Thoroton Secondary School in Flintham. He left school at the age of 15 to work as a motor mechanic in Newark. In 1985 he moved onto the engineering firm Hoval in Northgate, Newark where he worked as a test bed fitter on air receivers and central heating boilers. He has a son and daughter and three grand-daughters and one grandson aged between 17 and 23.

Councillor Robert Crowe will serve as the district’s vice-chairman.
